Terms of Use

What you can do with what you find here, and the limits of what it promises. Last updated 10 August 2026.

This is a publication, not a product. Using the site means accepting the terms below.

Using the articles

Every article on this site is published under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) licence. You may copy, republish, translate and adapt them, including commercially, provided you:

  • credit Adrian Hollister as the author,
  • link back to the original article, and
  • release anything you build on it under the same licence.

No separate permission is needed. The licence covers the written articles. It does not cover the AltLibre name and logo, the site design and stylesheets, or third-party trademarks and product names mentioned in the text, all of which remain with their respective owners.

Accuracy and opinion

Articles reflect the author’s own views at the time of writing and not those of any employer, client or organisation he is associated with. Technology, case law and vendor terms all move quickly; a piece that was accurate on its publication date may not be accurate when you read it. Published dates are shown on every article, and material corrections are noted rather than quietly edited.

Not professional advice

Nothing here is legal, regulatory, financial or security advice, and reading it creates no client or advisory relationship. Data protection and procurement decisions turn on facts specific to your organisation. Take proper advice before acting on anything you read here.

The licensing cost model

The calculator produces an indicative estimate from published list pricing at the stated date. It is an illustration, not a quotation, a tender response or a commitment. Real costs depend on your licensing agreements, migration effort, training and support arrangements.

Availability

The site is provided as is, with no guarantee that it will be available, uninterrupted or error-free. To the extent permitted by law, no liability is accepted for loss arising from use of, or reliance on, this site.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have exclusive jurisdiction over any dispute arising from them.
